  • Software Career in Financial Services Industry?

Posted by admin on January 13th, 2009 and filed under mutual fund software | 3 Comments »

I recently finished a Certificate of finance (U C Berkeley) and Quantitative Finance (or Computational Finance) from a different University. I am a software developer with very little finance experience. What are the prospects of landing a job in a trading/brokerage/hedge fund/risk mgt/mutual fund firm working with traders/brokers/financial svc pros in a software job?

wow, why is everyone here trying to push their web services instead of helping fellow human beings.

Anyway back to the topic. I work with several developers and one thing they are is that they are GOOD. They do not necesarily have had prior financial experience, but they are superb programmers.

I suggest that you take up consultant gigs in the financial firms and do a damn good job. They you try an internal move.
BTW I am also a Master in Financial Engineering grad (currently in structured finance). If you are good in software writing, you will land a good gig in finance.

What is the best option/software for me to use for filing taxes this year?

Posted by admin on January 11th, 2009 and filed under mutual fund software | 1 Comment »

All tax filing years from 2005 and prior, my wife and I have had her place of employement do our taxes for free, though we have not had anything 'special' to adjust taxes one way or another. However, in 2005, my wife and I moved between states,(receiving taxable cash and benefits from my company to compensate for the costs of the move), paid taxes in 4 states, under a total of 5 jobs between us, including a period of unemployement with my wife, generated profit from selling stocks and mutual funds to cover the period of unemployement, and ended up donating a fair amount of money to a charity.

Looking back, I can't believe that we went from no adjustments to nearly every single non-business tax adjustment possible in 1 year, and am doing our own taxes for the first time. I feel in over my head and am looking for direction in how to proceed.

both Turbo Tax and TaxCut software do a great job at walking you through step by step through the taxes, i have used turbo tax for 4 years and just this year tryed the TaxCut software online and was very pleased with it, TaxCut also has a hotline for questions as you process and its relatively cheap 40 bucks for a joint file with both fed and state included.

What is the best investment management/tracking software?

Posted by admin on January 9th, 2009 and filed under mutual fund software | 2 Comments »

I'm looking for the best software that will allow me to manage and track my investments, most of which are mutual funds and individual stocks. I have used Quicken and Money but they're too complex. I just need a simple program that will allow me to conduct simple analysis such as asset allocation models. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Quicken and Money are among the simplest. The other thing to look at is if your broker's website has some simple tools.

In mutual fund investing, does the investor have a choice of specifying his area of preffered investments ?

Posted by admin on January 6th, 2009 and filed under mutual fund software | 10 Comments »

I am planning to invest Rs 50,000 for the next 5 yrs in mutual funds of a corporate house. I want 40 % of my investments to be put in construction, 30% in steel, 20% in cement & 10 % in chemicals. However, is it a must for the fund manager to invest a significant portion of my investments in software sector for getting a high return ? Will the mutual fund house listen to my requirements or do they feel their pattern of investment will give higher yields than my required investment pattern ?

Mutual funds offer their schemes through an offer document. This document is unique for every scheme. It specifies the different areas in which the moneys collected will be invested. For industry specific funds, you can always get details of the industry they will be investing in. But it will not be possible to get a fund which will exactly match the pattern you require. No, mutual funds will not frame their investments according to your pattern or request. Mutual funds are managed by professionally qualified experts, hence their understanding and knowledge of investments usually is much more skillful than average investor.
